One of the greatest and most influential texts of antiquity, the Metamorphoses is universally regarded as Ovid’s highest poetical achievement. Divided into 15 books dealing with the creation of the world, earth, its phenomena, and a host of Greek myths and legends, Ovid’s book has ingrained itself into the collective mind of Western culture, sparking an infinite number of imitations and spin-off works to the present day. Rolfe Humphries’s faithful blank-verse translation of the original’s hexameters shows a definite kinship for Ovid’s swift and colloquial language, and a poetical manner in tune with the wit and sophistication of the Roman poet. Through Humphries’s version, the modern reader will be able to rediscover a major treasury of classical mythology which has perennially stimulated the imagination.

Ovid (20 March 43 BCE–17 or 18 CE) is traditionally ranked alongside Virgil and Horace as one of the three canonic poets of Latin literature. His poetry, much imitated during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, decisively influenced European art and literature and remains as one of the most important sources of classical mythology. Rolfe Humphries (1894–1969) was a poet, translator, and teacher who was awarded the Academy of American Poets' Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His work appeared in Harper's and the New Yorker.Review:
"A service for which no public reward could be too great." —W. H. Auden on Rolfe Humphries' translation of Virgil's Aeineid
