9780714614656: Russia in Central Asia in 1889 and the Anglo-Russian Question

Synopsis

The nucleus of this book less than one-third of its present dimensions appeared in the shape of a series of articles, entitled Eussia inC entral A sia, which I contributed to theM anchester Courier and other leading English provincial newspapers, in the months of November and December 1888, and January 1889. These articles were descriptive of a journey which I had taken in the months of September andO ctober 1888, along the newly-constructed Transcaspian Eailway, through certain of the Central A sian dominions of the Czar of Russia. Exigencies of space, however, and the limitations of journalistic propriety, prevented me from including in my letters a good deal of information which I had obtained; and were, of course, fatal to the incorporation with the narrative of illustrations or maps.

The author describes in exciting detail, a region long famed for its physical remoteness and impenetrability but which was becoming at the end of the 19th-century the theatre of imperial diplomacy and the threshold for international war. Written from the viewpoint of an English politician, this work also examines the intricacies of the Anglo Russian question at a time when British imperialism in India and alleged Russian expansionist policies threatened a clash of interests. Lord Curzon traveled widely in Russia and the East in the years before he became Viceroy of India in 1899 and later Foreign Secretary in 1919 and wrote very many accounts of his journeys as articles in leading English newspapers.
