9780714813349: Classic Art: An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance

Synopsis

from the back cover:
Heinrich Wolfflin (d. 1945) established a method of appraising an individual work of art by submitting it to an analysis of its formal characteristics. He taught us how to look at a picture and helped create a vocabulary for recording what we see.

Classic Art is one of his earliest publications to make use of this method. In it Wolfflin discusses the work of the major figures of the High Renaissance - Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Fra Bartolommeo, Andrea del Sarto - and concludes with an exposition of the guiding principles of High Renaissance art. As an appraisal of the art of this period, Classic Art can hardly be surpassed, as it combines rigorous method with sensitive perception of those qualities which will not submit to analysis. In this edition all the paintings and sculptures discussed are reproduced, many with characteristic details.
