Author Details

Noël Bourcier is Artistic Director of the André Kertész Foundation at the Department of Photographic Heritage, French Ministry of Culture. He has written numerous articles on photography, many of which have appeared in Art Press and is author of Denise Columb, or the Gift of Wonder (1992). He lives and works in Paris.

Photographer details

André Kertész's (b. 1894 Hungary, d. 1985 New York City) quest for authenticity made him one of the most influential photographers in the history of the medium. Kertész's earliest photographs date back to 1912, a time when he lived in Budapest. After a brief enrollment in the Austro-Hungarian army, he moved to Paris in 1925 to embark on a career as a freelance photographer. In 1936, he immigrated to New York City where he spent the rest of his life.
