The work covers astronomy, navigation, surveying, and the instrument-making trade in three periods: ancient and early modern, 18th century, and 19th century; it also has a short chapter on the 20th century. Bennett (Cambridge) places the historical development of the instruments in a scientific and economic context, including major developers and makers.
