Synopsis
In Drawing Landscape, Melvyn Petterson takes you step-by-step from selecting a medium that is appropriate for your subject and the effect you want to create to sketching on location. In the process he looks at a wide range of landscapes - hills and mountains, woodlands, wide open plains and moorland, water scenes - and the aspects that are particular to each one. Simple practice exercises - for example, smudging graphite powder with your thumb to create the impression of a swirling, stormy sky or using pen and ink for a scene in which you want to capture fine detail - are included throughout to help you master specific aspects of drawing landscapes. Each chapter ends with a detailed step-by-step project that brings together a number of techniques and subjects in one drawing.

About the Author
Melvyn Petterson studied at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts. An established artist and print-maker, he teaches drawing and print-making in both the UK and US. His first book. Cats and How to Draw Them, is being published in Autumn 2001.

As the authors discuss light and shade using monotone and color examples and exercises, readers will appreciate the delicacy of shadows and their variations depending on season and medium. A chapter on working outdoors provides useful information on necessary equipment and exercises in working rapidly, followed by detailed sections on such subjects as skies, mountains and hills, open spaces, and water.
