Trudy Friend is an experienced and accomplished artist and teacher who runs specialist courses in all media. Her special passion for drawing and watercolour painting led her to devise the highly popular 'Problems and Solutions' column for the UK's Leisure Pointer magazine on which this, and her previous title Drawing Problems and Solutions, are based. She has also written for The Artist and Artists & Illustrators magazines and lives in Monmouthshire, Wales.

This is a good book on how to paint but an even better book on how not to paint. Based on the author's popular "Problems and Solutions" series in Leisure Painter magazine, this volume clearly and systematically teaches the fine details of watercolor-how light reflects on green glass, how a curved copper surface reflects and distorts the room around it, and the myriad details of painting foliage, flowers, animals, and buildings. Most demonstrations begin with an extremely useful illustration of everything that can go wrong in a painting: for instance, an image of an old car in the weeds suffers from poorly mixed colors, its bumpers and headlights are out of perspective, and misused negative shapes make the car's grill look flat. This is a highly recommended supplement to, though not a replacement for, Zoltan Szabo's 70 Favorite Watercolor Techniques.
