Inspectorate of Railways, this book was the first work to record the history of British railway disasters. It covers every major accident between 1840 and 1957, and reveals the evolution of safety devices and methods which came to make the British railway carriage one of the safest ways of transport in the world. This new edition uses the 1966 revised edition -- the last produced by Rolt himself -- and combines this with a new selection of photographs.
