Two of Britain's leading naturalists have revised their 1967 book on penguins, birds of perennial interest and appeal. This fine title deserves a place next to the several other related books, such as R.T. Peterson's sumptuous Penguins (1979). It is full of high-quality illustrations, including maps, drawings, paintings, and figures from books of historical interest; new illustrations include some color photos and a plate showing all the penguins of the world. The authoritative yet easily read text has chapters on courtship, breeding, family life, food, predators, evolution, discovery, captivity, and exploitation, plus one with brief writeups on each of the 17 penguin species. Revisions have brought the text up to date. An excellent book that deserves a wide readership. Henry T. Armistead, Thomas Jefferson Univ. Lib., Philadelphia
