Cloth, 8vo, 26 cm, 256pp, chiefly ills, facs. From the blurb - "George Cruikshank (1782-1878) developed into perhaps the greatest of British book illustrators. His working life of over seventy years began as his father's assistant in political and social caricature in 1806 and, with no formal artistic training, by the time he was eighteen had succeeded James Gilray as the leading caricaturist of the day. John Buchanan-Brown, author of Phiz! The Book Illustrations of Hablot Knight Browne and The Illustrations of William Makepeace Thackeray, surveys the artist's life as a whole, but concentrates on the working artist rather than on the man. Drawing from largely unpublished sources, he illustrates the often stormy relationships with authors such as Dickens and the now-forgotten William Harrison Ainsworth, and publishers such as Richard Bentley and David Bogue. He shows, too, Cruikshank's importance not merely as an artist in his own right but as a key figure in British art. His long working life ensured that the traditions of Hogarth and Rowlandson were carried from the eighteenth to the nineteenth centuries and beyond. Moreover, he not only helped to create a distinctive, British school of art but also influenced such French caricaturists of the 1830s as Henry Monnier. The author has selected two hundred and fifty of Cruikshank's finest book illustrations from his prolific output. These reveal the versatility of his artistic skill which made his work so popular.". Contents: 1. The life : The caricaturist, The book illustrator - 2. Relations with publishers and authors : The rate for the job, Bogue and Bentley, Dickens and Ainswort, Captain Barker and Mrs Ewing - 3. The artist and the man. Index.
