An English veterinarian and writer, Vogel offers concise instructions for basic and emergency equine care, as well as guidance on prevention of common problems. In addition to detailing the contents for a first-aid kit, he provides "action" advice, giving the most critical emergency steps in bold print. Logically organized (by respiratory, circulation, nervous systems, etc.), his book includes a limited index and useful illustrations, although a few photographs would have been helpful. The writing is somewhat stilted, but the British English and spelling will trouble few users. Unfortunately, the book's binding may not hold up to frequent use. Those who keep horses, especially less experienced owners, may be interested in this book, but it won't be a necessary purchase for most libraries.
