In its main A-Z section, this British publication covers ground not often explored by American guides to antiques and collectibles, including Axminster carpets, "Billies and Charlies," fairings, garden gnomes, and trench art. Unfortunately, many of the entries are superficial, consisting of only a sentence or two and presenting information that could be found in any dictionary. A number of the terms used are British English (e.g., petrol lighter for cigarette lighter ). There are also inaccuracies, as when a longbow is identified as a crossbow, and prices aren't given. Included are short chapters on the cleaning and repairing of antiques and on the major periods of English furnishings; a listing of major pottery and porcelain factories, with their dates of operation; and brief biographical notes on a few craftspeople and designers. Of possible value to beginners or Anglophiles.
