Every Sunday on the Isle of Sark, Mervyn Peake would tell his children stories about pirates, shipwrecks and the Wild West. He illustrated his spontaneous stories with delightfully vivid drawings of the characters in his tales, but never set down words to go with them. Now, decades after Peake's death, world-renowned fantasy writer (and friend of the Peakes) Michael Moorcock has written verses to go with Peake's drawings. The result of this star collaboration - by turns funny, surprising and haunting - is accompanied by an illuminating and touching introduction by Moorcock. Duckworth is publishing The Sunday Books to mark the centenary of Peake's birth, which will be commemorated around the world.

Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was a playwright, painter, poet, illustrator, short-story writer and designer of theatrical costumes, as well as a novelist. Among his many books are the Gormenghast Trilogy (Titus Groan, Gormenghast and Titus Alone). Michael Moorcock is the author of numerous novels including the acclaimed Elric and Jerry Cornelius series. He has received the Nebula, World Fantasy, and British Science Fiction awards.
It is a match made in fantasy heaven: legendary genre author Michael Moorcock has written a series of verses to go with illustrations drawn by the late Gormenghast creator Mervyn Peake to entertain his children. * The Guardian * [Peake's books] are actual additions to life; they give, like certain rare dreams, sensations we never had before, and enlarge our conception of the range of possible experience. -- C.S. Lewis [Michael Moorcock] is the master storyteller of our time. -- Angela Carter
