Reviews

This superior, short-article, dictionary-style encyclopedia is based on The World Book Medical Encyclopedia (World Bk., 1988) and The World Book Illustrated Home Medical Encyclopedia (World Bk., 1980) under the publisher's continuous revision policy. Developed in conjunction with the faculty of the highly respected Rush Medical College, the Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center of Chicago, the American Red Cross, and the National Safety Council, this edition features about 4500 entries and some 1200 illustrations. Definitions with special question-and-answer sections are clear and easy to understand; cross references and the comprehensive index facilitate use. Especially notable and useful are the four appendixes devoted to the diagnosis of symptoms, health maintenance, nutrition and exercise, and growing older. One minor quibble: the book lacks a preface defining its editorial philosophy. A helpful supplement to other more detailed one-volume medical reference books such as The Mayo Clinic Family Health Book ( LJ 12/90) and The Wellness Encyclopedia ( LJ 2/15/91), it is recommended for school and public library collections.
