This book covers the history of banking in Ireland during the formative years from the last great crisis of the private banks in 1820 to the consolidation of the system under the Irish Banking Act, 1845, on the eve of the Great Famine. Based on research into official records, newspapers of the period and early bank papers the book tells the early history of Irish banks, often for the first time, with an account of their rivalries and troubles and of the steady growth of co-operation between them to form a system which was to endure almost unchanged until the 1960s. Close attention is given to the working of the Anglo-Irish exchanges through which the Irish money supply was linked to sterling and also to the influence of the banking and monetary system on an economy suffering from severe deflation. The banks built up an efficient system f or supplying Ireland with money, and for its external and internal transfer. The the system tended to be used to draw money out rather than to feed it in is attributed to the government and the owners of the money, rather than to the back. The appendices contains summaries of bank statistics and dates of branch openings.
