This short biography is an accessible introduction to the life and work of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). After a brilliant student career, Wilde took literary London by storm with his three great stage comedies, "Lady Windermere's Fan," "A Woman of No Importance" and "The Importance of Being Earnest," his masterpiece. But at the height of his triumph, disaster struck. His increasingly reckless homosexual affairs with Lord Alfred Douglas and others resulted in an unsuccessful action for criminal libel against Douglas's father, the Marquess of Queensberry, followed by Wilde's conviction for gross indecency. He served two years with hard labour in Reading jail. On his release, he moved to the continent, and died in Paris.
