Grade 5-8-This visually appealing set provides broad coverage of the American Revolution. Each volume chronicles a specific period, beginning with the causes; moving through the political and military events of the conflict; and ending with the adoption of the Constitution, Washington's presidency, and Westward expansion after the war. The books offer considerable background material and objectively discuss how civilian, governmental, diplomatic, and military actions influenced the course of events. Arnold and Wiener also provide information about the roles that women, African Americans, and Native Americans played in the conflict. Sidebars profile important leaders and provide information about related topics. However, the material is not extensively documented. Unfamiliar terms are defined in the margins, and the text is supplemented with large (some cover an entire spread), average-quality reproductions of period art, illustrations, and portraits of the principal figures. Well-written captions offer information not found in the text, but many of the illustrations are unattributed. There are also numerous maps of regions, campaigns, and specific battles. Each volume includes a chronology for the period it covers, a glossary, a list of additional resources, and a cumulative index. These books provide enough detail to serve researchers, but they are also interesting enough to appeal to general readers.

Elementary- and middle-school students studying the American Revolution will find this set a valuable resource. The information is arranged in a chronological sequence from the events leading up to the war, through the years of fighting, to the founding of the new nation.
Each volume is highly illustrated with pictures of significant people and places as well as maps. The battle maps are clear and explain the strategies of the commanders. Sidebars with supplemental information are placed throughout the text. Reference aids include a chronology, bibliography, glossary, Web sites, and lists of places to visit. With the exception of a few general electronic resources, these aids are specific to each volume. The last volume adds a brief overview of what became of the men on both sides who distinguished themselves in the war. Each volume also contains a comprehensive index.
With its chronological structure and wealth of illustrations, this set complements UXL's American Revolution Reference Library (UXL, 2000), which offers a selection of biographies and primary documents as well as thematic essays. Recommended for school and public libraries. RBB
