Gr. 4-9. Here is a supplement to the 24-volume Amazing Animals of the World (1995), which covered 900 animals. Some 400 additional animals that are not generally found in works for younger students are profiled. Each entry is listed under the animal's common name but gives the scientific name and then length, diet, method of reproduction, home, order, and family. Icons alert users to the habitat and main animal class and also enable the user to see at a glance if the animal is endangered. A small black-line map displays the habitat range. Every entry has a three-by-six color photograph and three to four paragraphs of text that gives useful facts and dispels any misconceptions about the animal.

A glossary and a set index appear in every volume--an improvement over the original set, where the index can be found only in volume 24. The index is essential because although the entries are arranged in one alphabetical order, they appear under the main--or perhaps most recognizable--word; for example, Common bream and Water Buffalo appear in the Bs. This can be confusing at first, but it provides a good opportunity to remind users to always look in the index.

Although there is probably not enough information in each entry to do an entire report (for example, entries don't list predators), there is enough to get started. Recommended for school and public library collections where there is a high demand for information on unusual animals. Dona Helmer
