Grade 6 Up?Intended to "help students come to grips with important issues of morality," this set contains 215 alphabetically arranged entries. Topics include "Anger," "Betrayal," "Capital Punishment," "Charity," "Corruption," "Euthanasia," "Hinduism," "Hope," "Peer Pressure," "Satanism," "Sincerity," and "Teasing." Each article is divided into sections introduced with bold headings. For example, "Conscience" is subdivided into sections titled, "Clear and Guilty Consciences," "Where Does Conscience Come From," "The Inner Light of God," "Natural Feelings," "Conscience and Experience," and "Developing a Personal Moral Code." Entries run from one to four pages and are followed by see-also lists of related articles. Black-and-white photographs appear on each double-page spread. Occasionally, boxed sidebars spotlight a well-known person who is in some way connected to the entry word. These people are not listed in the index unless their name also appears in the main article. Thus, even though Mike Tyson is discussed in "Aggression" and Magic Johnson in "AIDS/HIV," neither one appears in the index. Volume eight includes a page of further readings, some of which are aimed at teachers and some at students. The reading level and content of this set are ideal for middle school students but would also be useful in high schools for lower-ability students. The articles introduce substantive ideas without being overly complex. There is an effort to present various points of view. With many schools presenting a character-education curriculum, these volumes should find a ready audience.?Priscilla Bennett, State University of West Georgia
