Grade 2-5-This second set of titles in the series presents the religious and secular festivals of 16 countries including Egypt, France, and Pakistan. Widely observed holidays are balanced by a smaller number of regional celebrations. Each book opens with a simple map, a picture of the nation's flag, and a small fact box. The next two pages provide a general overview of the country's religions as well as a short list of greetings translated into the predominant language. Each discussion is accompanied by full-color photos and illustrations of musical instruments, food, garments, jewelry, and other relevant items. However, there are no photographs of people celebrating and the only pictures of individuals in traditional costumes are on the colorful but generic covers. Some holidays are elaborated upon in an accompanying traditional or Bible story. Crafts, recipes, and music scores are also included. Directions for these activities are minimal and the majority would require adult participation or supervision. This set will be useful as a supplement to general country studies that do not provide as much information on cultural celebrations.
