Museums devoted to the representation and interpretation of cities are a relatively recent phenomenon. With few exceptions, city museums all over the world have preferred collections of art, antiquities and science to the study of the city itself. This text explores the emergence of city history museums, and the nature of the cities and the histories that they represent. It examines the historiographical, cultural and museological issues and ideas involved.
