Bill Slavin has illustrated over sixty books for children, including Stanley's Party, Stanley's Wild Ride, Stanley at Sea, Transformed and The Farm Team. He lives in Millbrook, Ontario, with his wife, their cat, two rabbits, five squirrels and a family of cardinals.

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Song lyrics form a narrative about a little girl who's trying to eat her lunch but encounters interference, first from a pesky bug and then from each of the animals (frog, snake, rat, cat, dog, bear) she summons on the phone. They rudely gobble away to the repeated refrain of ``Munch! Munch! Munch!'' This may work as a nonsense song, but it doesn't work as a story. Cartoon drawings depict an outdoor farm scene where a lavish lunch is set. In the first drawing, hovering over the little girl is a cow with a phone around its neck. With the arrival of each animal, and for no apparent reason, the setting changes, as does the type of phone. While the drawings are colorful, humorous, and full of detail, and the rhythm of the song is clear, children are likely to be confused by the shifting scenes and may question the reason for inviting such ill-mannered creatures to lunch. Even the title is a little out of kilter.
