Synopsis
Suspecting that large-scale enterprise in Britain's maritime sector arose because of unique institutional precedents rather than the improved efficiency that is conventionally cited, Boyce seeks the explanation in the formal and informal contracts shipowners made with other economic actors. He finds that such connections mobilized physical resources, capital, and above all information about business development opportunities. Emphasizing the importance of communication, he quotes the shipowners themselves extensively. Developed from a doctoral theses from the London School of Economics.
