Hardback. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 215 x 135 mm. xii, 436 pp. An abridged edition of Fanny Parkes' travels in India, originally published in 1850 in two volumes, amounting to over 900 pages. Parkes' account provides a middle-class British woman's view on Indian life, and includes descriptions of the Zenana and Indian domestic arrangements often left out from male-authored texts. In this new edition, sections have been omitted where the information is replicated elsewhere in the book, and omitted is material reported by Parkes at second-hand. The text has been edited with notes by Indira Ghose and Sara Mills, who also provide an introduction setting Parkes' writing in its socio-historical context, and which considers the problems such a text poses for feminist post-colonial theory.
