Lees-Milne (The Last Stuarts, 1983) is perhaps best known for his work preserving historic British homes through the National Trust. His latest book consists of sketches of acquaintances, all now deceased, who, the author notes, "may be called aesthetes, and their interests were mostly esoteric." Of his subjects, the most familiar to American audiences are Vita Sackville-West and Sacheverell Sitwell. The significance of these studies lies not in the biographical information they impart but in their evocation of a way of life no longer in vogue.
