Tells the life of a Sicilian peasant girl, Teresa, who is brought to a village in Provence just after the First World War and is adopted by two very `twenties' lesbian ladies. Teresa falls in love with a fascinating young shepherd - becomes a harpsicordist - works with the French Resistance, and lives on into an eccentric, embattled old age. Across this chronicle of lives - Söderbergh, like an enchanted magician, produces characters and scenes that overflow with surprising details and illusions of presence - A novel about the sadness of things passing, and their wonder while they are here. I am only sorry that so many readers will spend some time with X, Y and Z (here fill in the names of some well-known contemporary writers) and miss the Nabokovian pleasures of Bengt Söderbergh."" - Hudson Review.

Text: English, Swedish (translation)
While much good contemporary Swedish fiction remains untranslated, some of the less interesting works find publishers, this novel among them. Soderbergh's knowledge of French culture is impressive, and although the plethora of information that he provides can overwhelm the reader, it is nevertheless in the descriptions of life in the countryside and in Paris during the Vichy government that he shows his strength. Still, this story about two expatriate women who devote their lives to preserving the cultural heritage of a small Provencal village is only mildly interesting because the characters lack credibility. For the same reason, the romance between their ward Teresa and Max, whose musical careers rise and fall, derives sparkle only from the milieu. Not a necessary purchase.
