This volume is a belated response to the epidemic of curricular revision that spread through medical education in the late sixties. Triggered by a multitude of factors, including student demands for "relevance" and public pressure for acelerated output of physicians, the curricular revolution struck deeply at the basic science--Flexner model, which had dominated medical education for half a century. Often motivated more by revolutionary zeal than by incisive logic, meidcal institutions througout the nation were soon competing frantically to achieve the most radical departure from the Flexner system. This feverish lemming race to the sea seems now to be abated, but the fallout of these convulisve years is still very much with those of us who teach beginning medical students.....
