In this post-World War I novel, Sarah Morgan, unhappy at home, marries the teacher who has been the only person to value and develop her artistic abilities. When her marriage proves empty, she leaves her Welsh mining village for London and Paris. Art lessons and painting commissions result in financial success and social standing. She and an aspiring writer travel to New Mexico, where both achieve artistic and personal happiness. Because James is a deft writer, the story glides along and sustains interest, particularly in Sarah. But the obstacles to success fall a bit too easily and numerous loose ends are left dangling.
