Synopsis
A new historical romance from a bestselling author
When Captain Merrivale dies, his daughters Martha and Penelope are left almost penniless. They find employment as schoolteachers in the Lancashire mill-town of Tapton. About the Author
Anna Jacobs grew up in Lancashire and emigrated to Australia in 1973, but loves to return to England and visit her family. She has two adult daughters and lives with her husband in a spacious waterfront home.

Martha and her sister are left with little when their father dies. Rather than live on as glorified servants in their cousins' home, they decide to open a school in a small town, where they end up teaching the daughters of one mill owner, and the sister of Ben, another. At the ripe old age of 28, Martha is firmly embedded in her spinster ways. And Ben, who has a lot going on and many people dependent upon him for their livelihood, can't be bothered to improve his less than gentlemanly manners. Martha and Ben get each other's back up whenever they meet, but circumstances force them to unite when a third mill owner, an evil man who starves and endangers his workers, tries to demolish Ben's operation, and even kidnaps Ben's sister.
