A tale of friendship and compassion in India
Following the massacre at Cawnpore in 1857, Emily and her sister Lucy are captured and held at the Bibighar, the house of the Indian mistress of the British Nabob. Years later, in 1919, a young British doctor called Jenny Garland encounters an elderly woman living in terrible poverty in the slums of the Cawnpore Bazaar. As friendship grows between them, Jenny discovers that they share a history neither of them could ever have imagined.

McNeill is a long-established freelance journalist and broadcaster.
A romantic but violent tale of India during its struggle for independence, McNeill's latest shifts between the horrific Cawnpore Mutiny of 1857 and 1919, when Gandhi was beginning to make his influence felt. In 1857, Emily Maynard saw her entire family, except for her husband and two-year-old nephew, Bobby, hacked to death in the mutiny. Emily was able to smuggle Bobby out with his ayah and was herself rescued by Dowlah Ram, a loyal servant of her father. Although already married to an army officer, Emily fell in love with Ram, and spent the rest of her life living as an Indian woman. Only by suppressing the terrible memories of what happened in 1857 has she been able to lead a relatively peaceful life. But the painful memories are resurrected in 1919 when she meets Jenny Garland, a young doctor who has come to India to try to get over her husband's death in the battle of the Somme. Evocative and realistic, with engaging characters and authentic historical detail, McNeill's novel makes spellbinding read for fans of historical fiction and romance. Emily Melton
