In Cook's third book about the Harvey family of Ford Farm in the Cornish countryside of England, tragedy and prosperity are two staples of life as Alec and Emilia Harvey keep the farm running after World War I, even though their lives have changed since the death of their daughter. Rather than rejoicing and enjoying their surviving five-year-old daughter, Lottie, they find her upbringing a source of contention. Emilia enjoys Lottie, while Alec compares her to the baby they lost. When Alec is injured during a storm, the couple seems to grow more distant, finding comfort with other people. Further complicating their relationship is the return of Perry Boswell. Emilia and Perry had fallen in love, inducing Perry to flee to London. Now he is back because he knows about the strain in Emilia's marriage, and is feeling hopeful about a second chance. But Emilia loves both men, and knows well her duty to her family and the farm.
