Reviews

The pace of life in Mallorca is gentle and leisurely. For aging, wide-girthed policeman Enrique Alvarez, this means a few hours of work each day, punctuated with frequent breaks for coffee and cognac, a cigarette, or a short siesta. When the wife of wealthy British expat and keen yachtsman Maurice Rook reports her husband missing and presumed drowned, Alvarez reluctantly gets to work and immediately becomes suspicious, especially when he learns that Rook had a life-insurance policy for a cool million. Alvarez suspects the man of staging a fake drowning to claim the money, but when Rook's decomposed body washes ashore, Alvarez realizes he is wrong. Perhaps, he thinks, Rook was murdered. Jeffries' extensive experience (130 books in 50 years) shows in his deft plotting, delightful protagonist, laugh-aloud humor, and shrewd plotting. A wonderfully entertaining mystery. Emily Melton
