Synopsis

Britain is under Russian occupation, but now it's the British resistance movement to watch out for. In a disused GPO tunnel, two men face Garnett. The smaller man is a police superintendent; his name's Endicott and he likes Garnett as much as a mongoose likes a snake. When Endicott tells Garnett that there's a split in the resistance movement and he wants him to look into it, Garnett doesn't want to know. He wants to get out of the country and out of the resistance. But Endicott wasn't making a request it was an order. The head of resistance operations in the South West believes in hitting everyone and everything in sight. His deputy favours a more selective terrorist campaign. They'd parted company but now, it seems, one of the groups has sold out to the Russians.

About the Author

Clive Egleton has extensive personal experience in the intelligence and counter-intelligence fields and is widely regarded as one of the finest writers of the espionage thriller in its classic form. His the author of twenty-nine novels, most recently ""One Man Running,"" He lives on the Isle of Wight.

From Booklist

Originally written in 1971 but only now appearing in the U.S., this story shows glimmerings of the taut, action-packed thrillers Egleton writes today. His plot in this early work is imaginative, suspenseful, and violent. Set in the not-too-distant future (still probably the actual past, given the original publication date), the novel posits London occupied by the Soviet Union but with an active resistance movement working to overthrow the occupiers. Garnett, an experienced intelligence agent, is ready to retire and head for the "escape pipeline" to America. But his superiors have one last mission for him. The main resistance leader, Richard Olds, is a hard-liner who'll shoot anyone in a Russian uniform. His deputy, Colin McDonald, believes in less-radical methods. Now McDonald has formed his own organization, and he and Olds are accusing each other of selling out to the Russians. Garnett's assignment is to identify the real traitor and find out whether the entire resistance is in jeopardy. A cleverly crafted, gripping, fast-paced story that will appeal to espionage thriller fans and Egleton aficionados. Emily Melton
