World War II is the backdrop for Cook's fourth book about the Cornish Harvey family. After Alec dies, his widow, Emilia, marries the aristocratic First World War veteran Perry Bosweld. Her oldest son and nephew are both pilots in the RAF, while another son, Tom, and his beautiful sister, Lottie, take care of the farm. Family tensions still run high as Alec's brother Ben turns his thwarted love for Emilia into hate, which poisons all his relationships, including that with his daughter, who has returned home with a secret of her own. When Emilia becomes pregnant, Ben becomes even more aggressive until he is tapped to help in the war effort. Meanwhile, the Harveys get help with farmwork from a "land girl" named Jill, who befriends Lottie and spurns the virile young men while waiting patiently for her soldier fiance. Cook brings to life an all-too-human family as it changes during war, making this a must-read for all fans of this fine series. Patty Engelmann
