About the Author

During Graham Ison's thirty year career in Scotland Yard's Special Branch he was involved in several espionage cases and the investigation into the escape of the spy George Blake. He spent four years at 10 Downing Street as Protection Officer to two Prime Ministers and also served as second-in-command of the Diplomatic Protection Group.

From Booklist

Ison produces another classic British procedural that shows both the sheer hard work involved in police work and the glow of satisfaction adept coppers feel when a case is closed. His two detectives, Brock and Poole, both definitely adept, are asked this time to investigate the murder of "Spotter" Gould, who was released from prison only to be shot at the gate by an unseen assailant. A few days later, another ex-con released at the same time as Gould is also found shot dead. Their patient teasing out of leads eventually leads to a people-smuggling ring led by a cunning mastermind who has set up what he's sure is an impenetrable network. Deft writing, lighthearted humor, a timely plot, and the spirited interplay between Brock and Poole add to solid procedural fare. Emily Melton
