Kirkwood was born on a Yorkshire farm. She went to Agriculture College before marrying a Scottish dairy farmer.
The Maxwell family saga, which began with Ross and Rachel Maxwell in The Laird of Lochandee (2003), continues into the fourth generation with young cousins Ryan and Paul. Like their parents and grandparents, the cousins want to develop a pedigreed dairy farm, but even with their newfangled methods, this isn't as easy. Scotland has mandated milk quotas. Tenants have turned the grassy feeding meadows into muddy wastelands. A nefarious neighbor has made their failure his goal in life. Then there are personal issues. But in spite of much strife, Paul and Ryan manage to court the women they hope will be the loves of their lives. Fans of the Maxwell saga will want to read this latest installment, but the book has enough background information for it to work well as a stand-alone volume. A family tree included in the front of the book makes it easy to track the many Maxwells who populate this poignant story of life on a Scottish dairy farm in the 1980s. Shelley Mosley
