Maeve Corrigan, once a successful businesswoman and resolutely independent, is dying. Having no children of her own, she determines that she will bequeath her great wealth to one of several nephews or nieces, the offspring of her two estranged brothers. And so, she arranges to meet three of them: Kate, a young woman whose family lives the other side of the world, in Australia, and who is suffering from debilitating illness. Against her parents' wishes, she seizes the challenge laid down by her aunt, and travels to England. Mitch Corrigan is the son of Maeve's ruthless brother Des, a man who will trample over anyone to get his way, whose wife, Judith has recently walked out on him. As Maeve's dying wish is revealed to each of these three people, a new future opens up before them, with the promise ofa whole new family...

Anna Jacobs grew up in Lancashire and emigrated to Australia in 1973, but loves to return to England and visit her family. She has two adult daughters and lives with her husband in a spacious waterfront home.
Maeve Corrigan, a successful and childless businesswoman, is dying. Her desire to ensure the continued success of all she's worked for induces her to try to get to know her nieces and nephews and decide which one is deserving of her estate. Maeve is estranged from her two brothers who believe that she bought them out of their inheritance. The story centers on Maeve's nephew, Mitch, a studious young man, eager to go to college, and not rugged enough for Des, his gregarious and cruel father; Mitch's 12-year-old sister, Lily, an illegitimate child of Des'; and Maeve's other brother's daughter, Kate, who suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome. The cousins have never met before, and as they are come to love Maeve, they are also given the gift of each other in a new, nurturing family configuration. Fast-moving and populated with compelling characters, Jacobs offers a wonderful tale about letting go of past hurts and grudges and embracing what's really important: family. Maria Hatton
