Synopsis
A Thomas the Falconer Mystery Winter 1594; the body of a young woman is found washed up beside the Thames. She has been cruelly mutilated, and cannot be identified. Meanwhile Thomas the Falconer arrives in frost-bound London on a sensitive mission: to persuade his master Sir Robert to give up his foolish infatuation with a notorious Lady of the Court. But the Lady Imogen's intrigues are more sinister than even Thomas imagines ? and soon he is caught up in a bizarre spiral of events. Thomas's friend Ben Mallam, the streetwise jingler (a dealer in used horses) returns to aid him. About the Author
John Pilkington has written plays for radio and theatre as well as television scripts for the BBC. Born in Lancashire, he now lives in Devon.

In Pilkington's solid sixth Elizabethan historical featuring dogged and idealistic Thomas the Falconer (after 2005's The Maiden Bell), Thomas's benefactor, Lady Margaret, asks him to track down her philandering husband, Sir Robert, who has been in London for a month without sending word home to Petbury. When the hawkmaster arrives in London, Thomas finds Sir Robert much changed, fearful that his latest paramour, Lady Imogen Semple, may be involved in a plot on Queen Elizabeth's life. In addition, Thomas winds up assisting an overwhelmed constable seeking to catch a brutal murderer who left a badly scarred woman's corpse in the Thames. While Pilkington may not be as gifted a plotter as the best historical mystery writers like the late Bruce Alexander, he successfully draws readers into his world and keeps them turning the pages.
