Margaret Mayhew was born in London, and her earliest childhood memories were of the London Blitz. She began writing in her mid-thirties and had her first novel published in 1976. She is married to American aviation author Philip Kaplan and lives on the borders of Wales. Her previous novels include ""Bluebirds, The Crew, The Little Ship, Our Yanks, The Pathfinder, Those in Peril,"" and ""I'll Be Seeing You.""
As Mayhew's latest romance begins, France has surrendered to Germany, and the occupation of Paris has begun. French artist Louis Duval decides he won't stay in France, preferring to escape to England and offer the British army his help in setting up a French resistance network. After a dangerous journey across the English Channel, Duval stumbles ashore, only to be placed under house arrest. He is temporarily billeted with attractive widow Barbara Hillyard until career army man, Commander Alan Powell, can determine if Duval is legitimate. Romance soon blossoms between Duval and Hillyard, but after just one tender night, Powell informs Duval that the British government has approved his idea, and Duval must return to France to establish the resistance network. Meantime, Powell also falls for Barbara Hillyard, but will a middle-aged army officer win out over a brave, handsome Frenchman? Mayhew writes winningly of an era that seems both romantic and dangerous in retrospect, creating likable, believable characters and a plot that's a cut above the usual wartime romance saga.
