Synopsis

Four London friends face hardship, drama and tragedy during WWII - As World War II breaks out, four friends consider the changes that war will mean. Tomboyish Becky plans to join the ATS, her neighbours Bob and Jim the navy and army respectively. Only Becky’s brother Will is left out of the excitement; because of a slight physical disability, he is forced to stay behind. As the friends are separated, their youthful enthusiasm is tempered by the grim newspaper headlines and their own experiences, and they will feel both joy and pain before the war is over.

Reviews

Becky Adams has grown up among boys, so she's more at home with tools and motors than with dolls and dresses. She's 19 when WWII breaks out, and when her brother and his friends enlist, Becky decides she will, too, hoping to join the Transport Corps and become a driver. At the recruiting office, she meets dashing Colonel David Hammond. From the first time he sets eyes on Becky, David is smitten, but working-class Becky knows she has no future with an upper-class officer. Throughout the war—the horrors of Dunkirk and the Blitz, the deaths of friends and family—Becky maintains her sunny optimism and selflessness. Even when David goes missing, her first thought is for his parents and Sara, his three-year-old daughter, whose mother died when Sara was born. It's only when the war ends that Becky realizes her true feelings for David, and although most readers will be able to guess the ending early on, it's still sweet and satisfying. Matthews' historical novels are as engaging as they are historically accurate, and this latest is sure to appeal to her fans, new and old. --Emily Melton
