A historical tale of sacrifice, folly and passion, from a much-loved author - 1907, County Durham. Lorna Robson works long and tiring hours in her aunt’s hat shop. Although she tries not to complain, the genteel poverty they live in depresses her. But when she discovers that a relation has left her a large but dilapidated property, her aunt is strangely furious, and they part on bad terms. Lorna knows she can never return. However, it is only when she sees Snow Hall that her situation truly dawns on her: selling the house is unthinkable, but how can she survive without money or friends?

Lorna Robson lives a Dickensian existence. Her aunt, a County Durham hat shop owner, mends the headgear of local miners and their families. Lorna is forced to work in a small backroom with no heat and little light. She’s engulfed by poverty and darkness. Then one day, a relative she never knew she had bequeaths to Lorna Snow Hall, a once noble estate that has fallen into ruin. Despite its many flaws, Lorna feels an immediate attraction to Snow Hall. The problem is, in 1907, it’s hard for a woman to earn any income, let alone enough money to heat and maintain a mansion. Lorna’s search for a way to keep Snow Hall is filled with pitfalls and emotion-draining experiences. Readers will root for the underdog as Lorna fights for her survival and that of the home she comes to love. --Shelley Mosley
