A new thriller set in China in Peter Tonkin’s Mariner series - Richard Mariner has just ridden out an earthquake powerful enough to destroy the Three Gorges Dam. He knows he should be ordering his ship, the Poseidon, back down the Yangtze at flank speed. But several things are making him hesitate: Architect Chang, the mother of the Poseidon’s captain, is missing and may need urgent help; his wife, Robin, puts humanitarianism far above self-preservation; and he has no intention of leaving his new launch, Marilyn, lost overboard during the earthquake, drifting in the river’s shipping lanes . . .

Tonkin is Head of English at the Wildernesse School, Sevenoaks.
Shipping-company owners Richard and Robin Mariner have just concluded the harrowing rescue of a priceless gold statue and are more than ready to head home. But when their ship is halfway between Nanjing and Shanghai, a massive earthquake strikes China, demolishing bridges and roads, flattening buildings, and wiping out entire cities. But worse is yet to come. The quake has severely damaged the gigantic Three Gorges Dam, and trillions of tons of water from the dam’s reservoir are already racing downstream. Do the Mariners do the sensible thing and head away from the water? Of course not. Instead, at the request of their longtime friend, Chinese government official Daniel Huuk, they head upriver to try to assess the damage and warn the citizens in the water’s path to flee to higher ground. Nothing is ever simple with the Mariners, though, and along the way, they encounter some nasty pirates and intervene in the kidnapping of Huuk’s daughter. This is a very fine series, peopled with larger-than-life heroes and filled with one thrilling high-seas adventure after another. Gripping and entertaining. --Emily Melton
