Una-Mary Parker is a commentator on the royal family. Formerly editor of Harpers & Queen and social editor of Tatler, she has also worked as a journalist for the London Evening Standard and the Daily Mail.
Rosie and Juliet Granville are the two eldest of the five notorious Granville sisters, who were real-life It girls in 1930s London society. Rosie is pretty and sweet, but she's no match for younger sister Juliet, who's a real stunner determined to ignore convention. Rosie finds the man of her dreams, only to have him stolen by Juliet. Not to be deterred in her quest, Rosie eventually settles for marriage to a "next best alternative." Juliet, on the other hand, plays the field before settling down, and to her parents' horror, her risque behavior earns her a place in the gossip columns. As the first clouds of World War II gather, both girls, still wildly jealous of one another, struggle to find happiness and fulfillment in a society with a rigid moral code that the war will drastically alter. Parker writes vividly of the social customs of the time, and her characters are rich, varied, and intriguing. An appealing historical romance with an open-ended conclusion that promises more to come.
