About the Author
Joyce Stranger is the author of a series of well-loved books about animals, Including Thursday's Child, A Cry On The Wind, Zara and These Hills are Lonely. She is a frequent contributor to numerous magazines, and has also written several books for children. Her books have been published throughout Europe, including Finland, Germany, Norway and Sweden.

Star, a pregnant gold retriever, is lost and about to give birth far from home in the cold Scottish Highlands. Stolen from her owners in southern England, she has escaped into the wild. As a domesticated and highly trained dog, she has no experience fending for herself. Star learns quickly, but the winter weather is deadly to a starving mother and her vulnerable puppies. Greg McLeod is a farmer burdened with problems. His daughter, Shelley, is recuperating from an accident that killed her husband and left her paralyzed, and his grieving young grandson, Dannie, is hard to handle. During an unusually late snowstorm, Greg comes across Star and her remaining puppies and brings them home. Star soon becomes indispensable to the family. Trained to help people, she assists Shelley in her wheelchair, while the puppies help Dannie heal.
