Jeannie Johnson is the author of five previous historical sagas, including the popular 'Sugar' trilogy. Born in Bristol, she grew up on a deprived housing estate, and now combines writing with a career as a television actress. She has appeared in both Casualty and Holby City, amongst others.
As England is about to enter a second war with Germany, Mary Anne Randall is struggling to keep her family together and her secrets hidden. Unbeknownst to her drunken, abusive husband, Mary Anne runs a small pawnbroker business from her washhouse. The neighborhood women bring their sorrows and precious belongings to Mary Anne, who provides them with a sympathetic ear and small loans. Her business is threatened when foreigner Michael Maurice reopens his uncle's pawnshop on a nearby street, and her home life starts to spins out of control with the approaching war. The children she has doted on and protected start to realize their peaceful home life is an illusion, while Mary Anne realizes that she wants more in life than a cruel husband. The changes and opportunities facing England's working-class families during the Second World War are brought gently to life in Johnson's touching story. Patty Engelmann
