Synopsis
A moving love story set against the stormy background of an English community in Portugal - Four young people are playing tennis beneath a hot Portuguese sun. A wedding has been arranged between Lucy and Andrew and the small community at San Domingos is looking forward to the celebrations. But for the people who live and work around the thriving copper mine, life is not so serene. The heat raises tensions, suspicions of infidelity flourish and tempers fray. Only Eduardo, the young Portuguese doctor, seems untroubled by the gathering storm.

About the Author
Pamela Oldfield's books have been translated into Spanish, German and Russian. Threatened uprisings among the miners and a dangerous underground explosion, combined with the depradations made by wolves and the eternal heat and scarcity of water, are merely irritants to their pleasure-seeking way of life. Oldfield's historical novel provides an intriguing look at the culture of indulged young Brits in the heyday of the British Empire. It is a sad commentary on that society that her most perceptive and insightful character is young Leo, sent home early from boarding school because of a chicken-pox outbreak.
