Synopsis

Rowena Summers is a pseudonym for author Jean Saunders who began her career as a magazine writer and has published over 600 short stories and some eighty novels.

In the midst of the Roaring Twenties, young Captain Lance Melchoir is bored with life in his family's estate outside Bristol, England. His parents are insisting he get married to ensure the family line, but he is not so sure that's important anymore. Cherry is out on the town with her good friend, a fellow kitchen maid at the Melchoir mansion. During a tipsy walk home from the dance hall, they get lost and are surprised when Lance offers them a ride home. Cherry has always had a crush on Lance, so she gives in quickly when he seduces her in the stables. Cherry then fears that she is pregnant. She is not, but her estranged brother sends a blackmail note to Lance. Cherry has plenty of opportunities to tell Lance the truth, but something always stops her. She can barely admit it to herself, but she is hoping to marry above her station, a seemingly impossible dream.
