After England surrenders, they are sent to the notorious Changi internment camp where they encounter Maitland, the school's gardener, who once robbed Butler of a chance to lose his virginity. Amid the daily risk of starvation and the eternal hope of escape, Butler's anger toward Maitland resurfaces and increases as the three men are sent on a mission to the Thai-Burma border to help construct a railway system that will usher the Japanese emperor to victory. At last, in 1989, the men happen upon each other again on Jerusalem's Mount of Olives, where decades of hatred make revenge seem imminent.
