Synopsis

Max Rydal faces a terrible dilemma when one of his own men is accused of a heinous crime . . . - Following the final performance of Carmen by the amateur operatic group on the military base, there’s a party for the cast and crew. In the early hours a young woman staggers into the Royal Military Police post claiming to have been viciously assaulted by Sergeant Phil Piercey of the Special Investigation Branch. Max Rydal, recently back from Spain, seizes the chance to return to his job and clear Piercey’s name. But as further evidence emerges, it’s clear that either Piercey is guilty, or he’s the victim of a very clever set-up.

Reviews

Max Rydal, head of 26 Section of the Royal Military Police in Germany, is recuperating from serious injuries sustained in a bombing incident. So when a call comes in that a young female corporal has been found severely beaten near the base, the case falls to Sergeant Major Tom Black, Max’s trusted assistant. The victim, Corporal Maria Norton, names Sergeant Phil Piercey, a member of 26 Section, as her attacker. Although there’s no love lost between Piercey and Black, Tom knows he must remain neutral in a case that has the potential to turn into a real black eye for 26 Section. To complicate matters, Max decides he’s well enough to come back to active duty. Max is sure Piercey is innocent, although Tom’s not convinced. But the more the pair investigate, the more confusing and complicated the case becomes. The truth, when they finally uncover it, is as upsetting as it is surprising. A solid plot, plenty of investigative detail, an authentic-seeming portrayal of military life, and likable lead characters make this another successful entry in Darrell’s military-mystery series. --Emily Melton
