This work, 'The Psalms: Prayer Book of the Bible,' is a translation of 'Das Gebetbuch de Bibel,' which was first published in 1940 and was the last of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's writings to appear in his lifetime. In March, 1941, he was forbidden to print or publish; two years later, he was arrested by the Gestapo and began the term of imprisonment which ended with his execution in April, 1945.
This short work belongs to the period in Bonhoeffer's career when he was director of the Confessing Church's seminary, first at Finkenwalde and after its closure by the police, in a more remote part of Pomerania. The final section, 'The Blessing of Morning Prayer,' which does not appear in all editions, reflects the background of that time, when Bonhoeffer was training young pastors whose faith and calling were to be so severely tested in the years immediately following.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906 1945) was a renowned and beloved Christian minister, seminary professor, and theologian who was imprisoned and later executed by the Nazis for his resistance to Hitler. He was the author of the bestselling classic The Cost of Discipleship, Life Together, and Letters and Papers from Prison.
